But what many might not know is that Candy was also married to Rosemary Margaret Hobor, a woman who was equally as talented and successful as her husband. Rosemary Margaret Hobor was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on February 21, 1945. She and John Candy met while both were working at a local radio station in Winnipeg. They married in 1970 and had two children: Emma (born 1971) and Daniel (born 1974). Rosemary served as the personal assistant to John Candy for over 20 years until his death from a heart attack on April 5, 2003.

Early Life

Rosemary Margaret Hobor was born on July 5, 1945 in Toronto, Ontario to parents John and Rose (née Brennan) Hobor. She married actor John Candy on December 20, 1977 in Montreal and they had one child together, a daughter named Arielle. The couple divorced in 1995. Rosemary later married Canadian television personality Russell Peters on October 5, 2001.

Hobor first started working as a model at the age of 16 and began her acting career in the late 1960s appearing in small roles in television shows and films. She landed her breakout role as Brenda Strong’s character’s best friend Ellie Miller on the sitcom “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” from 1970-1971. After “Mary Tyler Moore”, Hobor appeared in several other hit shows including “Little House on the Prairie”, “Rhoda”, “Alice” and “WKRP In Cincinnati”.

In 1984, Hobor starred opposite John Candy in the comedy film “Uncle Buck”. The following year she co-starred with he comedian in the horror film “A Nightmare on Elm Street”. Her other notable credits include roles in “Planes, Trains And Automobiles”, “Caddyshack”, “The Great White Hype” and “Hot Fuzz”.

Hobor retired from acting after appearing in the 2004 comedy film “Stuck On You”. Since retiring from acting, she has been dedicated to raising awareness for mental health issues through her charity work.

Marriage to John Candy

John Candy was married to Rosemary Margaret Hobor from 1984 until his death in 2004. They had two children together, John Christopher Candy and Catherine Catherine “Katie” Candy. Rosemary is currently retired and living in Toronto. She has written a memoir, A Life With John, which was released in 2018.

Legacy
